EVPLab - UNIVERSITY OF ROMA TRE

The Laboratory of Experimental Volcanology and Petrology (EVPLab) of the Departement of Geology (University of Roma Tre) has been established in 2007/2008. It is provided  of the main instrumentations and facilities to measure physical   and chemical properties of magmas.
Instrumentations in the Laboratory of Experimental Volcanology allow determination of the following properties:

- Transport properties: low and high T viscosity of liquid and liquids + crystals and bubbles. Density and thermal expansivity
- Calorimetric and thermodynamic properties.
- Magmatic crystallization studies.
- Raman spectroscopy measurements

Experties
- Internal energy of melts and crystals (enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity) as a function of temperature, during processes as partial melting, solidification, the advective   transport of heat, and volatile exsolution and degassing;

- High T volumetric properties (molar volume, density, thermal expansivity), governing the buoyancy forces associated with transport of melt and magmatic mixtures;

- The role of volatiles, such as C-oxide species, F-, Cl- and S- species, on the rheology of silicate liquids and on the degassing processes;

- Combined effect of crystals and vesicles on the rheology of magmas at various deformation regimes (constant load and strain rate);

- Crystallization studies of magmas;

- Textural studies on erupted products for the understanding of the degassing mechanisms
